Try to see if it's coming through the walls. It could be something that got into an air duct or into the wall somehow and died b/c it was dumb and didn't belong there.

In my kitchen, though, it's like 99% of the time I forgot I threw meat in the garbage.

I took the trash out (it's in the kitchen closet) and I really don't think the smell was coming from there. so I guess it's something in the walls. i noticed it when I got up this morning and it hasn't gotten any better (or worse, thankfully)
