1. inhale 1/2 way and hold your breath
2. take 2 drinks of water (or just swallow twice) without breathing out or in.
3. inhale the rest of the way and then breathe out.

You may feel the need to burp - but the hiccups should be gone.

Depends on the type. When I worked at a job that included doing them on people, it was 1-2 weeks but it was a pretty deep background check.

this one's for employment i think? did a drug test and they filled out a background check thing right after the interview on thursday and I got an email saying that they sent a background check request that day too

Yeah, I mean for employment. There are a variety of different levels they can request (state, federal, various government agencies, driving history, etc.) so it depends on how far they go and which ones they want to grab. The more and deeper they need, the longer it'll take.
