Although I don't do shoes, so I'm talking outta turn, but..by definition, a sandal is a sole held on the foot by means of straps or ties. A flip-flop/thong is also a sole held on the foot by a strap between the toes. Thus making it a sandal. The whole thing can be made of leather, plastic, cloth or grass, or in the case of Asia, made partially of wood....but what'd I know?....I've worn some of each...with(gasp) and without socks.
