Don't do it. I sent him a message last night and asked about the pay cut. He responded today:

Right, I know the $$ is not good for this task. We had a
deadline over the weekend so accelerated the task with a higher $$, but that
is passed now; we are trying to balance cost and urgency. We may repost
later with a higher $$.
