alienware uses all dell parts so that's where my vote is toshiba parts are delicate. Pick what you like.

I don't know what your budget is, but when I bought mine six months ago the Dells were the best for the prices (the Inspiron 7559 and XPS 15 9550). Like you can get http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-15-7559-laptop/pd?oc=fncwpw5715h&model_id=inspiron-15-7559-laptop on the dell outlet for ~$500.

HP Envy series is p tight for a working laptop. Inspiron are good too and pretty cheap, same with some Asus models

Lenovo are nice but tend to be pricier

my toshiba is quite nice, actually. other than a webcam that never worked. but I don't need people to see how incredibly good looking I am. I already feel ok.

Yeah, then there are a lot more options for you and it's just about finding a good deal from the top brands. You could go into a Microcenter or something and actually try them out in advance so you know what you're getting into and pick a few models to target.
