i want one, but i worry my knees would hit the underside of the desk?
Having your knees up against the bottom of your desk is generally the most ergonomic position for your upper body anyway. When I use anyone else's computer or I'm on-the-go, I put the keyboard on my lap because I'm so used to it being so low. It allows the elbows and wrist to relax.

I usually have the mouse that low at my own desk, but there's unfortunately no way to flexibly emulate that on-the-go or at someone else's desk.

Just custom-build your desk. It's the easiest thing to make yourself, but one of the most essential.

In the audio community, we do it all the time like it's no big deal, since our parameters are so peculiar.

Mine was made with a $100 piece of solid wood for the top from a local business, and then cheaper wood for the legs. The top piece is the most important.

You can literally buy a nice slab of solid pre-cut wood and then just stack bricks for legs. Lol.

You'd be surprised at how elegant it can look if you buy pretty bricks.

When you stop thinking of it in terms of Ikea and boil it down to "a stable and slightly elevated flat surface", it takes the mystery out of it. It's not hard.

IMO if you spend 8+ hours a day at your desk, having a nice one that's meant specifically for you is hardly frivolous. Spend your money where you spend your time.

... or if you're stuck using someone else's desk like I am at Starbucks, bring a keyboard and stick it in your lap.
