I restarted two times, shut down once, tried to update, troubleshoot, uninstalled, reinstalled, update, restart, etc. I'll eventually figure it out. It's aggravating because it shouldn't be a problem. Thanks Windows. (Thanks for your help in all seriousness, though.)

Did you check your audio drivers? I'm guessing you did, but just in case you didn't

Yep. It says nothing is installed. It makes no sense at all. Probably some sort of "update" issue. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hopefully it's not some kind of phishing attempt, have checked for malware?

I regularly do, but I run Ubuntu which doesn't really have the malware issues Windows does. I think it was just a bug on Amazon's end because seconds earlier I logged into Mturk fine with the same account but Amazon payments threw the error.

I've been dealing with this for the last 2 days. I ended up having to uninstall my audio device, then reinstall the Intel driver through the website directly. Took lots of trial and error - I think a windows update screwed something up.

I'm a bit relieved it's not an isolated incident. This laptop is just a few months old so I hope it isn't self destructing yet. My first thought was the windows update. I'm glad you got it figured out. I'll try that now.
