I learned about the phrase while listening to A Way with Words this weekend.

The phrase originated from the Roman writer Pliny, who in 77 AD (?) described a copy of Homer's Iliad was in such a tiny hand that it could fit into the shell of a nut. Pliny was obviously exaggerating about the smallness, so that was how the phrase became generally considered as a hyperbole (an exaggeration not meant to be taken literally).
