They definitely need heater, Betta like it pretty warm, even for tropical fish. Around 78 to 80 degrees, which would be a pretty toasty room in Winter.

I'm gonna get one for the other fish. He thinks I'm being overly cautious but I read that same info about them needing warmer temps.

That "really simple" script is an extension called MTurk Suite that @Kadauchi has been working on for weeks/a month now

Yes, tropical fish need the warmer temps or else they live shorter lives or get sick. But also a heater keeps things constant, so the water temps aren't jumping around from warm during the day to very cold at night. A heater for a small tank should be pretty affordable.
