Can the default tags for the smiley smileys not be changed to have closing colons?

I just don't think it would make much sense to add another colon? It converts emoticons to smilies, which only ever have a single colon to represent eyes. If we add that extra colon, I'm not sure if anyone would ever remember to include it.
