I know nothing about the industry, but that seems a bit harsh for an entry level position.

Well they aren't mean about it, (they didn't actually say "you suck") but an important part of a portfolio critique is being honest. And they were honest with me.

nothing against you, and nothing to upset you, but I want to take a moment to go on a tangent here
several years ago during an interview, I told the guy, "listen, this is taking longer than we both thought it would, and I'm going to be honest with you. If I had to make a choice between hiring you, or buying a twelve pack of light bulbs, I would probably go with the light bulbs. this interview is over."

Well I have a girlfriend now, and I'm also getting a dog at the end of December. Life seems to be coming together. OH and I'm officially a volunteer for the local humane society

I think it also has to do with what your career is and how much training you have. I wanted to be a graphic designer, but I suck at graphic design (at least thats what the 1000 potential employers have told me)

I've failed at every career goal I've ever had except mturk/user testing. and I don't even think those count because I never "set out" to do them, I just kind of stumbled upon them.

Can't you get better at it? (re: graphic design)
or maybe you need to change up your portfolio? Can you get help doing that?

All creative fields are tough. And often very underpaid when you do get work. Keep at it. Do freelance. Be firm in your pay. Turk until then. I wish you the best of luck with it!

Try looking for industrial graphic design positions. They want more traditional style.
It may suit you.
