yall gon ignore the fact she said supper?

I'm in VA but feel this forum is an Oregon Trail vortex sometimes
Historically dinner was used to describe what americans now call lunch. It comes from an old school latin word that meant to break ones fast... which generally happened around early mid day rather than the additional third modern meal 'breakfast'. Supper on the other hand comes from a french word (souper if I remember correctly) which means "evening meal"...

Anecdotally I've also heard it explained by some professors here in the states that to dine is to "go out" while to sup means to eat at home.

I've always said supper for the night time meal and dinner when we go/do something fancy. (Or Christmas/Thanksgiving Dinner which are of course lunch.)

I think I should go see a movie tonight, these days you never know how much time you have left to enjoy watching a movie guilt-free.

Yeah... which makes sense as well. Since Dinner was historically considered to be the main meal of the day... while supper was a much lighter meal in comparison.

I still haven't seen Thor and I'm very upset about it.

Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner was whenever my mother decided to quit cooking it.

Come pick me up and we'll go. I'm not doing anything tonight. You drive, I'll pay.

I don't feel like I'm being given a ton of choice on the matter but sure why not. I'm gonna sneak in a bag of popcorn in my jacket, it always makes me feel like a master spy instead of just a poor person.
