Historically dinner was used to describe what americans now call lunch. It comes from an old school latin word that meant to break ones fast... which generally happened around early mid day rather than the additional third modern meal 'breakfast'. Supper on the other hand comes from a french word (souper if I remember correctly) which means "evening meal"...yall gon ignore the fact she said supper?
I'm in VA but feel this forum is an Oregon Trail vortex sometimes
Anecdotally I've also heard it explained by some professors here in the states that to dine is to "go out" while to sup means to eat at home.
