I never get past the first six sounds on these... I wonder what I am doing wrong.

honestly, if judging those first six sounds is difficult for you, you don't want to do the main tasks anyway.
you have to judge the pitches and whatnot of various nonsensical sounds.
it helps me to visualize where they will approximately be on a music scale, so that if two different sounds are an octave apart I can easily see it.
