I used to do that when people carded me, then I worked as a cashier for a while.

I worked as a cashier too. A couple of years ago. Rarely carded people unless they were visibly close. But, never carded a 40 year old.
That said, I've been guessing ages for 20 years, as a bartender. So, maybe that's why I feel differently. I just feel it's unnecessary for cigarettes. It triples the amount of time everyone spends in line. If kids want smokes, they're going to take them from mom/dad or get them from a friend who did. The only time I've seen kids buying smokes in the past 10 years, was because it was a police sting(for revenue). But, I'm sure this is different depending on where you live.
