Quite frankly, I'd be the one who was offended. I assume that they see your turking as not working, so you've got all this spare time to ...not work, except for them. If you feel that you just have to justify a no, tell them you're working those hours, the same as them(assuming that they are all employed and at work). There appears to be enough of them to care for their mother. It is NOT your responsibility. It's theirs and they are obviously trying to put it on some one else. I know this scenario too well. I've been an artist for years and people see me at home (where I worked at my art), without a job (outside of the house for a boss who wasn't me), and therefore free to do things for other people. For free usually. I've had this type of thing happen numerously over the years. One of my father's distant cousins tried this one on me, too. I was at university, but he said I could skip a year!!! and care for his bed ridden wife--who I'd never met. I didn't know him either!. The man was retired and AT HOME ALL DAY. Women are seen as automatic caregivers, whether they want to be or not. Tell the fools NO.....and if that's the way they picture your place in their lives, you might want to start looking for new BF, too.............sorry for the rant, but this kinda thing really pisses me off.

I'm sure the women/caregiver thing is true. But, as a man(loosely), I get this all the time too. Like ALL THE TIME. People will even sometimes say, I didn't want to bother you, while bothering me. People drop their children off at my house, without a thought, and leave for 9 hours. They call and text at any time, and get mad when I turn my phone off. When my grandparents got sick, I was the obvious choice. I'm sure there is a gender bias but, it's just as much of a struggle for some men, as well.

I agree 100%. Luckily, I have never had trouble saying NO. Including friends, family, people at work, etc. If it's reasonable and I want to, I will. Otherwise if you are an asshole enough to ask me something that will put a burden on me, then I am asshole enough to say NO. With NO excuses.

I used to have trouble saying no. But, eventually you get so many people taking advantage of that fact that you're overwhelmed before you even start your own list of things. At that point, you learn to say no and love it, or you have a meltdown. I may have done both, at some point.
