I should have quoted you earlier. I grew up like your hubby and only remember one brief exchange of words between my parents. Never really saw them discuss or fight at all, so when I got married it was just like you said. My parents were and are awesome, but I wish they would have shared more about relationships and finances...
It is still sometimes tough. He still struggles. But at least I understand what's going on.

I know why his parents are the way they are. Adult children of alcoholics have a series of problems all of their own, and both his mom's and dad's families were troubled. Avoiding conflict is ingrained. I have similar problems with my own family. But even when we visit his mom, we have to be careful not to get into one of our spirited discussions. She always thinks we are fighting and almost runs away. It makes me sad.

That's sad. Though it does depend on what constitutes a fight. Hubby's mom and dad never even disagreed with each other in front of their kids.

It left both hubby and his sister totally unused to adult disagreements or even differences of opinions. So neither learned to disagree, discuss or argue in an adult, constructive way. I know hubby struggled all through his first marriage with it and counseling helped him too late for that relationship, but at least I got the benefit.
My ex-husband's family never verbally disagreed and used the silent treatment when they got upset with each other. My parents bickered and yelled about every little thing. It took my ex and I quite awhile to figure out productive discussion! Of course, he IS my EX-husband, so... hmmm.

with the current advances in both social media and in robotics and AI, we are moving to a world where people are more likely to have friends online than offline -- it's easier to interact with people behind the safety of your computer/phone.
social anxiety increases as people prefer to stay indoors than to try to jump outside of their comfort zones, and their children follow suit, as their parents are busy with their smartphones.

anyway, I can't wait to meet the robot of my dreams <3

Well, my dad is dead. And... No, I don't want to give away any of the details of my childhood. Maybe the next time I drink a bottle of whisky and make an ass of myself.
