a dogpark i once went to in Charlottesville VA had christmas tree drop off, and they would mulch it for trails and dog park. I thought it was nicer than just throwing it in a landfill

When I was in my late 20's and, trying to start my own family traditions, back when I cared more about things, I used to dig a hole in fall. Then when Christmas time came around, I'd buy a little pine tree in a pot. I'd let it live in my house for 3 weeks, well watered. Then, after xmas, I'd go plant my new tree. Felt like I was giving a present to the planet, rather than taking.

I feel the same way. I have pie pumpkins in the house (and grew a bunch last year), but I don't like to carve the big ones because they are soup. (I like pumpkin soup).

We actually don't know our neighbors (we live on a busy street) - but I saw the smashed pumpkins this morning and my daughter and I were so sad.

So, I picked two really interesting ones out and put them on his porch

That's a sweet gesture. Plus a good lesson/example for your daughter.

I got my aversion to Jack-o-Lanterns a long time ago, when I was volunteering at an after-school rec program. We had a bunch of pumpkins donated and, the administrators planned a pumpkin carving/decorating night. On the night, I was supervising the kids and, when I went over to one boy, he hadn't started. I asked him if he needed any help and he replied, "I get to take it home when I'm done, right?" I told him that it was his and, of course he could. He then said, "Well, I don't want to draw on it because then we cant eat it." After choking back a few tears, I explained that if he drew/painted(non-toxic school stuff) on the outside, without carving it, he could still eat it. He was happy and lightly decorated it after. But, then I realized that we were asking these kids to destroy more fresh veg than they may have seen all month, I got a bit angry. Yes, the kids were having fun but, I just felt like nobody had thought it all through. I don't know. I'm just strange. But, I never carved a pumpkin after that.
