You got like 70/30 chance for approval/rejection.

Only doomed if you would have screened out, or if the requester isn't lenient. It doesn't hurt to at least try and reach out. As much as everyone is afraid of crappy requesters, it seems like most are decent people (minus the fair pay thing).
