The spire is one of the new parts, made in the repairs done in the 1860s when the flying buttresses were added.
I was looking thru wikipedia's Notre Dame cathedral entry. Dating to 1864, it was a recreation of the original spire and the recreation was made of oak and lead. I guess there is no saving/restoring that, but it would be awesome if they made a new re-creation of the spire with carbon fiber for the restoration, adding 2019's modern technology to the rebuild. I think it would also be cool to replace those ancient wood beams with steel girders covered in lumber from the era of the 1163 groundbreaking so you have the fireproof'ness and durability of modern construction with the wooden roof appearance the cathedral seemed to be known for.
