I definitely think I'm better equipped to take school seriously now at 39 than I was at 18. I went to college for 3 years and dropped out because I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. Kudos to your mom!
Its nice to see someone with a very similar story. I want to go back and will as soon as possible. I know you can do it!

I've been thinking of going back to school. I quit my job as a tech writer and trainer 14 years ago when I had my first son. The thought of going to class at almost 40 is scary though. Anyone else gone back at such a ripe old age and if so, what did you do? I'd actually love to go to law school but I'd be 50 by the time I was ready to actually practice. RN is another option, but I do hate people so I'd need to find a special kind of job - a friend of mine got her RN and works from home for Humana basically answering phone calls - An advice nurse, would be the non-fancy name, I guess, or lab work. She gets paid very well. What I really want to do, where my passion lies, is veterinary work - wildlife rehab or exotics in particular. I got a taste of it when I volunteered at a raptor rehab center and got to assist the vet with surgery, and give meds, do wing wraps, etc. But there's no money there, that's more of a hobby when the kids are grown, I think. Anyway, just something I've been mulling over the last year or so but not quite brave enough to take the plunge yet. EDIT: And for the sake of just making all the cash I can until retirement, I thought about IT. My husband makes a really good living doing it, I can't imagine if we doubled our income.
You should do it. I went back into the classroom a few years ago to help out a woman that I know. She was actually an English professor who was trying to establish a continued education class for adults within our city. It was a real mixed group of people, not a regular classroom at all. It ended with me tutoring some of the students after the class was finished. I realize that's not exactly what you're asking about, but the entire process was rewarding. It's interesting to be an adult in a classroom. It's interesting to actually appreciate the experience rather than just sit there wondering how long the class will last.

I jumped at the chance to be a stay at home mom. It felt like the most important, meaningful thing I could do. I didn't miss my job at all. I hated working for "corporate america." Then again, I was still pretty young when I quit. I may have a different view now. Whatever I do, I either want it to be meaningful or I want to be a total sellout and make tons of cash so I can do what I want when the kids are grown. I'm fine with either. :) My sister went back at 33 and got a degree in music performance. Now she's a stay at home mom but she does get some gigs here and there. But it's her passion.

Doesn't so much matter why any of us are working on Mturk. The only thing that is certain about us as a group is that we are resourceful and brave. Take those skills and make the most of them.

I think people in the US should embrace the GAP year like many kids/families do in england. Its my personal opinion that very few high school graduates have a clue what they want to do with their life. And despite having the world at their fingers through the internet, they really know very little about the wider world beyond what they have grown up with. 6 months to a year, with the full support of their families, spent far away doing something on their own before starting college would give them a better foundation upon which to build their college education.

There are so many people that get a degree then never work in it because they learned afterwards that it wasn't what they wanted to do with their life. So much wasted effort. Something like thruhiking the appalachian trail would be an eye opening experience (if they didn't spend it completely stoned for the whole 2100 miles). On the trail everyone is kind of the same no matter if they are a lawyer, retired doctor, retired military, young vet, pig farmer, mushroom hunter, carpenter, free spirit, etc. Every night these people from all walks of life would bond with the others they encounter at the shelter. People shared their life stories and it was very eye opening about what is out there.
