If a survey incentivizes you in the survey for a bonus to do a task and then informs you that there was no bonus at the end, is that cool? Most surveys I've taken have informed me if the bonus was real or if they wanted me to act like it was, but rarely used deception on that end. What do you think?

I think it sucks.
Even when a study "has to" include deception by design, ethical researchers would give participants the opportunity to refuse the use of their data (while still getting paid), after the deception was revealed.

[IANAL]: When a deception involves material contractual terms (like pay), it's also a violation of consumer protection laws in states like California.

If you write a Turkopticon review, it's entirely legitimate to mention such deceptions.
TO's Rules prohibit mention only of "screening information, information about attention checks, or completion codes."
But detailed reporting about payment is what TO was designed for.

Hey all, nice to be here. I've been meaning to start mturking for a while now, but just never got around to signing up.

All the newcomer guides were really helpful, especially the "first 1000 hits". I just had a quick question, it mentioned somewhere about 'number threads', but I can't seem to actually find a thread like that. As a complete beginner, I've been doing surveys here and there, and doing only a few 'grinding' tasks, like transcribing really obvious audio.

Is there any grinding task that is relatively easy, doesn't have to pay too much, and has a high chance of being accepted?
