Congratulations! You have been selected to participate in our daily entertainment study. In this study, participants will be asked to complete a short daily survey about entertainment choices for 14 days.
As a reminder, each daily survey will take approximately 2 minutes and will pay $0.25. If you complete at least 12 out of the 14 surveys, you will receive a bonus of $3 at the end.
Additionally, if you miss more than 4 daily surveys, you will no longer be eligible to complete to additional surveys in the study.
You will also be contacted to complete a 5 minute follow-up survey 1 week and 2 weeks after the study has completed.

The 1.38 number is not the "average payment on mechanical turk" in 2010 but rather the average absolute lowest amount the researchers found a turker would work for before refusing to work for a requester (which is rather depressing.)

I was gonna say, maybe this whole thing is a study on fucking people over with low pay and seeing their reactions. I believe Brelig has been running a similar but much bigger experiment for a while now.

That's also a really, really old paper. The landscape of MTurk has changed so much since that paper was published.
