this could be a lot of different things. from almost nothing to serious. my guess would be just plain bronchitis because that's so common. he should see a dr. again if they are just treating the cough. he might need antibiotics or something else.

are you still there? If you are and have decided to watch it - get him into a hot steam shower (he can just sit nearby) or have him drink a hot cup of coffee. If you have a humidifier that would be great. If you go to the ER and he has trouble on the way, turn up the HEAT (until you are sweating and have him breathe right at the heater vent
(I have asthma - so I know a lot of home remedies for that).
