They can be taught not to jump on people... and litter boxes make the whole house smell like ass. Obviously... you can clean the litter box and get rid of that smell, until they use it again later that day. When you wash your dog it doesn't stink for a week or so.

Even dogs that have just been washed smell awful to me. I've never been around a dog that I didn't think smelled bad. I think in reality I'm just hypersensitive to the smell of them, compared to the average person, because no one else I'm around ever seems to notice it. When I was a kid, I had a relative that would visit with his dog and it was always a miserable experience. I don't go visit them very often now as an adult, either, because they have three dogs in the house and it's almost overwhelming except in very short windows of time.

The neighbors in the apartment right next to me have a dog. When they take it out for a walk, the dog odor comes under my door and I can smell it all the way at my computer at the far end of the room, which is a good 20 feet away. More than once I've actually gone into the hall with air freshener after they've gone back into their apartment and sprayed it around to try and mask the smell. It's not that they don't wash the dog regularly, either, from what I can tell. My daughter does not notice the smell at all. It's definitely just me. My cat, on the other hand, I rarely notice anything from, except cat breath on occasion. Same with every cat I've ever owned.
