Still haven't gotten around to making a HIT, yet. So, I'm sure there's an answer to this that I can't get to myself. When you pay up front for HITs are you paying to have them posted, completed or approved? At what point does Amazon say that their cut is, theirs? I might not be saying it right.

The fee is calculated and taken when I post the HITs if I cancel/reject then the HIT money, plus the fee is refunded into my account.

I know they hold back however much you need to fulfill outstanding hits (whatever's either live or just not reviewed yet). There's a separate tally for those.

I emailed the requester about the missing follow up HITs. The response:

"I know what happened now. There is another MTurk Worker who took the qualification test with an ID that starts with the same 5 characters as yours (which is very uncommon!). I accidentally gave them the qualification to try the study instead of you. I'm so sorry about that!"

Not a thing.

But it takes a lot of steps and I just don't think it's something people should get all worked up about because it's not likely to happen. I know everyone gets rejections every once in a while, and sometimes we all get rejected for the same thing but 9 times out of 10 whatever you're doing is likely going to pay out with no problems.
