Cancun is really touristic and pretty safe. I have been a few times. You can leave the resorts and have no fears.
It is beautiful area and there is something for everyone. Pyramids, nature, cenotes, parks, adventure parks, night clubs, scuba diving. I would highly recommend it.

It's the same in any foreign land. Look like an easy target, you become a target. Dont be dumb tourist.

That's almost bad as one that gives you a code if you don't qualify and tells you to enter the code in the hit and submit it.

If you do go, I recommend Coaba. It isn't as well known as Chitzen-itza, but it is beautiful, several pyramids all hidden in a forest. You can rent bikes and ride to each one and you can climb them. You can't even get close to the pyramids at Chichen-itza.

I've heard a few stories of having to bribe the local police. I'm not sure I would want to go to a country where I can't walk around and actually experience the culture. What's the point of going to a resort you can't leave? Might as well go hang out with the mexicans at the local restaurant then.

That's just how South America is though, bribing isn't an exception or a bizarre thing, it's the way things are done. If you want any government thing to get processed you gotta bribe people, if you want cops to not give you a hard time, another bribe. I'm not saying it's gonna happen to you or anything,specially in a tourist place like Cancun where everything is set up to cater to foreigners, but that's the way the system works. At least the conversation rate make bribes cheap.
