I've heard that from more than you though. Same with Jamaica, you don't leave the resorts. That's pretty depressing.

As long as you stay in the tourist areas and don't look/act like an idiot, you'll be fine. The majority of those people don't want tourists to be hassled, crime to rise, or anything to lower tourism. Those people depend on tourism dollars.

Just 1 that I saw. You pretty much have to grab them as soon as they drop. Back in the day you could keep grabbing them long afterwards but once everyone realized you could do more than one they became golden tickets no one wanted to let go.

That's just how South America is though, bribing isn't an exception or a bizarre thing, it's the way things are done. If you want any government thing to get processed you gotta bribe people, if you want cops to not give you a hard time, another bribe. I'm not saying it's gonna happen to you or anything,specially in a tourist place like Cancun where everything is set up to cater to foreigners, but that's the way the system works. At least the conversation rate make bribes cheap.

It's like this in much of the world. My dad used to just budget bribes into the study abroad program's cost in China. You also had to give a pack of cigarettes to any bus driver you hired. That part was weird.
