I can confirm that both of those things are true. I live ~40 min from Austin. The part of Austin that people get so crazy about (the quirky-ness and music) is actually quite small, and only considered quirky because it's surrounded by more conservative minded communities.

Someone else mentioned it matters how much you're actually making, but I'm sure there are plenty of cost of living calculators out there on the internet.

It's not so much a cost of living issue but more of "Im in my 30s and am I moving to get drunk and fat or for professional reasons"?

The people who do your taxes at those places have like 3 work days of training... and probably learn less than everyone here does reading on the internet.

hahaha. well look at how much your cost of living would go up. don't forget to account for your sanity in to the equation. i've read that getting a raise only makes you happy for a short while, but shortening your commute makes you happy for a lot longer. but that's more than a 25% raise so if you can make it work and the cost of living doesn't go up too much that'll be a lot better for you

As for traffic...it depends on where you decide to live. In a former life I lived in a condo complex behind my office. I walked to work & walked home for lunch.

only the interest on student loans is deductible, and only up to 2500 I think. i pay around 20k a year in student loans and i'm definitely still paying income tax on most of that. i'm not someone who thinks the government should pay for everyone to go to college, but come on at least give us a break with the income tax...

How much in total do you owe? We're sitting around 150k left and we pay around 50k a year in malpractice insurance ( which is also tax deductible)
