Are you actively reading, or just passively reading? IE are you taking notes in the margins of your book and underlining/highlighting passages as you go on, or are you just sitting there trying to absorb text? Also, this may be placebo, but chewing a flavor of gum, or eating a particular flavor of hard candy while I was reading a particular subject, then the same flavor while I was taking the test used to help my recall. Also, make sure you're drinking plenty of water, and maybe try going near a natural light source (like a window) to study. I nearly failed a class freshman year of college because I couldn't stay awake in the classroom, as there were no windows, and all fluorescent lights. >.>
