This. If it wasn't her fault, the at fault insurance should pay.
if they argue (they shouldn't), there is a waiver on the internet that you send to them that basically says they're responsible for any hospital stay etc that are the result of using the car seat after the accident. Sometimes you gotta be mean, but once you mention that you know about the waiver, most back down and will refund you.

Can anyone with experience in this sort of thing recommend me a convertible car seat for toddlers? Something I could get from Amazon.

The only important thing is that it's not used. Because you wouldn't know if it had been in an accident before. Other than that, there are some pretty strict guidelines for car seat manufacturers, do anything you buy should meet or exceed those guidelines.

In the end, you're mostly just going to have to consider the size of the kid, and the way it looks. I'm guessing the kid's about a year old, maybe less, since you're asking about convertibles
