Learning a skill takes time. You don't have time if you need money. And that doesn't include the money it takes to learn a skill. You're right, of course, and it's not at you, it just grinds my gears how people say 'learn a skill!' like it's instant and free and will cure job problems overnight. (That still came off aggressive and it makes me sad, I don't want sad Patrick)
FWIW, I don't think you came off aggressive at all, and I agree 100%

Folding clothes requires more skill than making a phone call. Really. Our society does not value what we deem "women's work" and that's the whole source of this mess.
Trust me, I know folding clothes can be tough (I hated it and sucked at it at JCPenny). However, people are willing to accept the job for minimum wage and thus companies will not offer you a lot more. Mainly you can teach someone in a short amount of time to be decent at it. Where as a job that takes months to years to learn will get you more money because few people especially in the United States have the perseverance or discipline to stick with it.

I wasn't following this conversation, but I don't think this is really true in most cases. More like people have something that they need to be done, and they try to figure out what's the least they need to pay to get what they want. Skill isn't the only thing that plays into that. Making phone calls doesn't usually require much skill, but most people hate talking on the phone to strangers.

I think we have different ideas of what "willing" means. Many people in minimum wage jobs don't have a whole lot of choices. It's very easy to sit back and say what we think those people should be doing with their lives. But the bottom line is that every job should pay a living wage. By that, I mean if you work 40 hours per week, you should be able to pay basic living expenses. As it stands, it is out of reach for many minimum wage workers to be able to "learn a skill" while they try to live.

And to be told at a lot of places you need college experience to fold clothes. It does happen. At some point. You take what you can get to survive. Oh hey Turk.

There is government programs out there to help people. There is something call job corps that will train you to learn a skill like plumbing, chef, ect for free. Or you can take a loan out and do something like real estate school, developer bootcamp, ect. Plus, a lot of those minimum wage jobs (retailers especially) aren't going to be here for long due to automation so you shouldn't consider them imo.

Job Corps has a lot of eligibility criteria that most people probably wouldn't meet: https://www.rescare.com/job-corps-eligibility/

This is simply not true, at least near me. People working minimum wage usually can't just "take out a loan." Come on.
