I have read articles from NPR probublica and salon and they all seem to fixate on how much of specific event donations go to that event. They mention Haiti and the boondoggle that was (which was a boondoggle for everyone not just ARC) but they don't really mention that what they don't spend on the single events goes mostly to low scale disasters that no one gives a shit about like tornadoes and non-hurricane flooding
. (except the people in the disaster and the ARC)

I still remember the story my x's uncle told that I think I've related before. At the Battle of the Bulge the red cross charged the soldiers for their coffee and food.

Yep, I just heard they were under tornado warning already, along with Palm Bay. That'll be happening all over for the next couple of days.

@SCOTTM if you're worried about them, just give them a call and make sure they're prepared. I'm sure they would appreciate it and it would abate some anxiety on your end. But just know that we'll still be standing after it's all over. I know that the media is probably very hypey right now in other parts of the country, and it is a scary situation for everyone. But they gave us ample warning and they have been so efficient in getting everyone prepared.

While I agree that there's a lot that needs to be fixed when it comes to first responders and aid distribution in general, imagine not having the red cross shelters and response for disaster events. Who would and could step up with that much of a coordinated effort, manpower, and infrastructure to support the military and FEMA efforts during recovery?

Well, that's too bad. I always thought the Red Cross to be a humanitarian group. In any case, I can't help what Walmart picked as their donation group of choice. My Sentry employer is also asking for donations from it's associates to the Red Cross, then the Sentry foundation matches the donations. My Sentry employer chooses the United Way as their donation group of choice. The next two weeks we have our two week donation campaign going. It's always a fun two weeks, plus we get to wear jeans to work.
