When you stop thinking of it in terms of Ikea and boil it down to "a stable and slightly elevated flat surface", it takes the mystery out of it. It's not hard.

IMO if you spend 8+ hours a day at your desk, having a nice one that's meant specifically for you is hardly frivolous. Spend your money where you spend your time.

... or if you're stuck using someone else's desk like I am at Starbucks, bring a keyboard and stick it in your lap.

This is a real question: is that supposed to be best ergonomically? I'm really interested. Right now I am only using a laptop, and I am very often using it at Starbucks. This really SUCKS for ergonomics. I do own a GREAT wireless keyboard that I used to use when I built my own desktop several years ago. (I think it is a Logitech keyboard, with a rather curved shape. It sounds crazy to talk about a keyboard being great, but this is FAR better than most desktop keyboards, and FAR FAR better than any laptop keyboard.) Does it actually work to stick a keyboard on your lap while using a laptop? I've thought about this and I'm still thinking...

I have a laptop as part of my 2 PC setup. I haven't touched the built in keyboard in 6 months, maybe a year.

EDIT So, yes, use an external IMO, unless it's a touch screen laptop. :p
