probably a really stupid question but on these A9s, when they say wedge shoes and give only examples of high heel type wedge shoes....does that mean regular shoes (with no gap) are a "no"

Correct
Wedges have a solid heel/base all the way under the shoe (or to the toe if it's not a platform style), no gap.
