if the grass needed mowing, I had to do it before my dad did, or else my mom would give me crap about it all day.

I would have no idea how to answer that question on parents' income. My dad was the steward of a working mens club and we lived in the free accomodation next to the club. We never had huge amounts of spare cash, but I know they didn't pay utilitiy bills either. But dad worked such long hours, minimum of 10 hour days and overtime was expected and unpaid. And was never around. He worked 12-5, 7-12.30 mon to fri and 12-12.30 sat, Sundays he had off.
There isn't a button for "too poor to be comfortable but not poor enough for help"
