okay so I've been gone for like 17 hours in case no one noticed. I figured out everyone here needs a traditional IRA and a high-deductible insurance plan with an HSA. I feel REALLY smart rn.
I have a 401k with pretty much nothing in it but it will cost whatever I have in it in fees to transfer it, convert it to an IRA but they haven't got notice that I quit that company over a year ago. I don't know what my point is except thanks, maybe I should figure this out after all, i seriously need to start some savings.

no because the entire point is I don't want to pay taxes. until I'm at least 59-1/2. traditional IRA's are tax deductible the year the contribution is made.
at its very basic level, unless your expectation is you will be doing mturk forever and not making more money in the future (ie never entering a higher tax bracket then you currently are in), it's better to pay the taxes now. Plus the Savers credit that lets you deduct a portion of your Roth Ira contributions up to a certain percentage (depnding on various factors). Roth IRA is the optimistic IRA
