was this requester an abnormal situation?

It seems when I try for quals, I get paid a nickle or dime to do the qual test and then the better money is made in doing the actual tasks if I get the qual.

Seems weird to me you get decent money passing the qual unless the pay becomes poor on the actual tasks you got qual'ed for.

I've seen a few bonus for taking the qual test MLDataLabeler did it for their semantic segmentation qual test.

they weren't forthcoming about the problem or the solution. but whatever workaround they employed seems to have fixed it for now. they called back twice and escalated it etc etc.

The test didn't say anything about paying to take it that I saw. Maybe I missed that part. So what would the harm have been to let those who took it and passed get the qual?

It was a pretty long qual.
Seen a few others do it also.

If you took the test and scored above 29, you could accept the $8 hit to get paid for taking the test.

The test didn't mention pay because there was originally a HIT for it. I don't think they realized that we can share qual test links even when there are no HITs up. They thought that anyone who passed the test would be able to grab one of the $8 HITs that were up, then when the HITs were gone nobody would be able to do the test anymore. But the link just got shared around after the HITs were gone, so the requester started bonusing people the $8 just to be nice.

It was a misunderstanding on their part of how the Mturk qualification system works.
They are trying to get their data as clean as possible and that's difficult when you have 100s or even 1000s of workers.
Can't monitor them all.
They only meant to qualify 100 people originally.

HITs have been gone for a long time and they've been paying through bonus since then.

not related, I'm trying to find a gif that I can't remember the exact wording for, and I'm wondering if anyone knows the one I'm talking about. Something like "you can ask for it, but you're not going to get it..."
