My mother had the same reaction, lol. She probably knew before I did.

lol my mom was just like 'ok cool, me too' and my dad still refuses to acknowledge it, although he does point out exceptionally attractive women to me in public.

I haven't read the book, but I remember a movie version from almost 20 years ago. Didn't watch the whole thing. lemme look... The Handmaid's Tale (1990)

I'll probably read the book after the second season ends.

wow. I don't really like watching movies but I might give this a try just to see how it compares.

I have been reluctant to voice that I am not in love with this show. I loooooooved the book. I really wanted to like the show. I don't hate it, I just wandered away from it after a few episodes.

And I really like Elisabeth Moss, so I wanted to really like this show.

I got halfway through the first season and then realized the problem: Walking Dead starts off with decent, likable characters and you watch them slowly become bitter assholes to some degree or other across the course of many seasons. FTWD starts off with them being assholes.

That makes a lot of sense actually. I think I watched about half the first season, then was like "meh commercials I'll watch them when they are all recorded" and then they got deleted and I realized I didn't care enough to watch them anywhere else.

I wanted to love it too! I'll admit I'm pretty biased though. I usually hate TV or movie adaptations of books because I have this exact picture of what the characters look like and how they act and when it doesn't match up I get upset lol. It's dumb but it's just how I am.

The writing style was definitely different than I'm used to, but it was pretty interesting. Easy for me to overlook because of the plot.

Maybe it is a book thing. I have a weird memory in that I can read a book then reread it a year later and still be surprised by it because I forget 90% of the details. Like, I have read Gone With the Wind at least 8 times (I seriously love the book) and each time I read it I think, "Huh, I don't remember that..."

But with Handmaid's Tale I remember certain details well and I remember loving and adoring the book and spending hours discussing it with a friend. So maybe I'm too much of a critic of the show?

Do you like any of her books? (Just curious. I have a couple of authors I REALLY want to like, but I cannot get into their writing style. And I also have a super tough time reading books written in the present tense. That just...bugs me.)

Well, I came out to my mom as bisexual today, and it went well. This shit has been hanging over me for years, and she pretty much said "i know" :laughing: It's good to just finally have it out there instead of wondering what if.

That's the only book I've read of hers, actually. Agreed on the present tense thing, it just feels off somehow.

Yes, totally. When you hear someone talking and you can tell that their mouth is dry in the way that they're talking. It makes me want cry.

Or when people need to stop talking and clear their throat, but don't.
