very nicely put, well written. 10/10All IRB's are different. They are formed at each school that does research. I don't think they care so much about blocks on workers or even understand the procedures at mturk. They are interested in making sure that people are protected and not abused - study subjects are not harmed (not given toxic drugs, not subject to psychological harm). You really can't threaten someone with an IRB, per se, but if you report to an IRB they will investigate whether protocols were followed.
Remember, if a researcher agreed to pay you .10 for an hour of work -- the IRB signed off on that protocol months ago - so, um, there's that about it. Money is not their reason for existing................psychological and physical harm is.
A student probably doesn't want an IRB complaint - it's a hassle - but the bias of an IRB is also to protect the school AND it's professors and staff (including students). The researcher could get cited by an IRB, but mostly what will happen is that they will rectify the situation and it will be a learning experience (one filled with hassles).
THe worst thing is if we were really abused by the study design - and that would call the original IRB committee into question - since they made the decision to go ahead with the research. There is a bias to protect the IRB, too, since condemning the IRB is putting the school on the line (liability wise). So, this scenario is really unlikely...........but there are oversight committees in place in case it gets to that level.
From a student perspective, the worst would be to have to throw out the research because the results are too skewed/biased/based on a faulty study design.
