I'd recommend bookmarking the slickdeals laptop page and just checking it a few times a day until you find a kickass deal on something decent.

Years ago a deputy told me they called those "gates" over on the Humble side of Lexington Woods the "hellsgates"

I don't even know if that's still there. Lexington Woods was one of the many places I lived when I was a kid. There's been some redistricting going on over there off of Aldine-Westfield between Spring, Humble, and Aldine in the past 10 or so years. I'm west of I-45.

That's what I was doing. My brand new laptop's motherboard died so while warranty was repairing it, I was scraping by with a borrowed Chromebook. It was barely a step above a phone or a tablet. I'm with @TSolo315; keep an eye out for a good deal on something decent. I spent a little under $600 for mine and it's pretty comparable to the ones posted above, except I opted out of the SSD and went for 12GB RAM and touchscreen, instead. And the $90 four year toddler-proof warranty which has already saved me once.

When my ThinkPad died a couple of years ago I bought a used Samsung craptop from someone on Craigslist for $110. It was perfectly fine for turking, and I still use it sometimes long after I got a better laptop.

Tiger Direct has good deals on towers and decent deals on laptops....can get refurbs fairly cheep

Wow, I had an Acer as my first PC that could access the internet. Pentium 75 mhz, 14.4 modem and a 500 meg hard drive. I haven't heard that name in years.
