I haven't been able to fix it I sent a message to the requester by going into the HIT frame for the qual hit, click HIT Details, and then contact requester. (I did get a confirmation email for the sign up time I chose. If you did too, maybe that will help them sort this bug out before the trial time.)

I was just stuck with the proceed button being whited out, but clicking the sign up link again allowed me to proceed

Yes, it is. They're giving $50 Amazon gift cards to the participants. They might just give you a code for it though. I don't think they'll mail them.
