looking for off topic group consensus here, I mislabeled a package and have been attempting to get USPS to fix the address, and they told me it wasn't possible basically. So I figured I'd let it get returned to sender and just do it again.

Now I've been called by a private number, and they left a voicemail with my name, and they left a callback number for me to call. It's a local number, and goggle doesn't turn up anything about a local usps branch with that number.

is someone attempting to scam me?

Perhaps.

I'd use a free Google Voice number (I have a few from 5+ years ago). You could use the number they've been calling.

Listen to them, when you call them. Record the call if you like. Do not volunteer information. Consider giving up the objects in the package, and starting again. Consider it might be a good Samaritan. You could also place the call at the post office, if you need their support, with your cell phone.

I've had the IRS scam call, "The cops are coming to your home for back taxes pay now!." The first call really rattled me, then I paused, and when they called again, I calmly said, "You're lying, and I will call the police if you call me again." They were stunned, asked me to repeat it, then they hung up, and left me alone.

This is when you decide how much effort you'll put into, getting it back. Good luck!

If you go to the HIT in your queue, you can click the HIT title and there will be a contact link in the bottom right corner of the HIT info.
