I one heard that the opposite of "depression" isn't happiness, it's vitality. (On the right meds or whatever, one still might not be happy, per se, but at least one is getting out of bed in the morning and doing stuff all day. So it sounds like your fam - or many of them - have that 'bad' allele that Sapolsky discusses. That s u c k s, my friend. I remember that 12 or 13 years ago when my clinical depressions started, it was pretty well settled that serotonin levels were 'the answer': I note that that is no longer the case.My family has a history of it, including my sister, so I was curious about it. Particularly why there's so many different meds that only work on certain people, which he explains brilliantly. It seems the history of pharmacology seems to be " Hey this thing makes people happy, we've found the cure for depression!" and then eventually realizing it's way more complex than that.
I just said that because of all the Samsung phones exploding in the news lately.I don't have a Samsung...I just tossed it up because...money

I don't know where I read it, but describing how antidepressants and other meds are still in their infancy I read a quote saying, " What we are doing is drenching a car in gasoline and hoping that enough of it gets into the gas tank".I one heard that the opposite of "depression" isn't happiness, it's vitality. The Brits also have some great vids of clinically depressed peeps. Do a search; you might find them interesting. ( By the way, I always make a point of citing clinical depression to make the distinction between that illness and the plain old everyday everybody-suffers-from-it-cause-life-is-tough episodic depressions )
