FWIW when I was typing this Annie Dillard quote into my last paper for grammar class, Word corrected *her* grammar, which I thought was pretty funny. I'm certainly not the expert esprit is, just a nerd who loves words and reads way too much, but I'd agree - go with Grammarly, even if they are prescriptivist.

It's just that it's a quick way for people to feel superior. Like they go, " Haha you said a double negative that means it's a positive", well language isn't math so fuck you. Don't get me wrong, I love language and good writing, but it's all made up, the "rules" that are there don't matter one bit if you're getting your point across.

It's like telling Cormac McCarthy that he can't write because he doesn't use quotation marks for dialogue. How boring language would be if we never deviated from what's accepted.

I've gotten a handful of editing samples over the course of all this and the first one I ever got was full of changes/comments, now there's not quite as much. Or it's problems that aren't necessarily grammatically incorrect just wrong somehow. There's also more than a fair chance that's just from learning by the feedback from the human editors rather than Grammarly.
