i'm researching something at work & reading this academic article from 2010 and

like the one of the authors actually had to type those words out? and they submitted it to a conference, and got it published? and at no point did either of them think, huh maybe i'm actually a huge piece of shit?

When I first started turking I was excited by $2/hour that I could earn while watching TV. Thank jeebus that feeling didn't last long and I started ignoring those requesters.

i don't know much about the culture of computational linguistics as a field, but normally whoever reviewed the paper would just have had to consider stuff like whether this research made a contribution to advancing knowledge, i don't think ethics would be high up on their list of things to think about. they did have to clear it with an ethics committee (but i'm p sure i've heard that ethics committees don't like research participants to get paid """too much""")
also i've just read that these researchers rejected submissions that didn't meet some criteria, and would reject all of a worker's submissions if they got less than 2/3 right overall on the first question in each hit, here's an example:

Prompt word: startle
1. Which word is closest in meaning (most related) to startle?

• automobile
• shake
• honesty
• entertain

i can't be sure that i'd've got this "right" tbh? it's pretty confusing. and the workers had to do another 10 follow up multiple choices for their 4¢

Sweater = going out.
Sweatshirt = sitting at home on the couch.
