Good point about working sick part as when I worked at Amazon warehouse in the holiday season of 2016 they encouraged workers to tough it out. It was a bad idea because the warehouse had poor ventilation and they had these fans that blew everywhere, so when people coughed or sneezed the germs would go everywhere. This caused a lot workers to get the flu and miss a week. Brought down production, plus the few workers who didn't get the flu became overworked and tired.
Perfect example of the American Short-Term Benefit attitude. Almost every corporation, to their detriment, seems to only look at the short-term gain. Even if the "long-term" benefit isn't even that much farther out. Working sick is stupid for the workers and the company, but American companies do it because it feels right (which is to say, wrong).

Or organizations encourage it by not really offering "sick" leave. I just get Paid Time Off ( and a lot less combined than when I got sick / vacation separately at my last job)

I have to use it for appointments, travel, and being sick. So I often go to work sick.

Same for my mother. She worked at a local hospital in their rehab facility for a few years as a tech, and now is in the main hospital as an anesthesia tech (and looking to go back or elsewhere, the hospital doesn't treat their workers well). She only gets PTO, and somehow when she filed for FMLA the first FOUR DAYS she's sick don't get paid, so she had to use her PTO for that, too.
