Doesn't work, and to be slightly more blunt, I don't care. My job is to inform the right people of the risks, and make a recommendation. I do that in writing, so when this comes back to bite us, and it will, my ass is covered. The main thing I've learned in a decade of IT, is that you have to pick your battles, especially in companies where security ranks under the business unit. It's problematic, and a corporate culture issue. Nothing you're going to solve yourself, or anytime soon. I threw 87% of what I learned in my BS and MsIT out the window because both the literature and professors seem to have forgotten that how hard it is to undo and battle years (decades in some cases) of corporate culture. I did the same with my other BS. I'm in the middle of a thesis that heavily criticizes current research, literature and teaching for being too idealistic and embedded in frameworks and theories that are either one hit wonders are not easily applicable to the current business environment.Use this line
"90% of all hacks come from botnets, as in massive groups of computers that just test basic security for flaws, which in metaphor, is basically 3000 people showing up in your town to test every doorknob and car door to see if they're unlocked. 80% of companies get hacked because of this methodology, because people don't treat it seriously. Not treating this seriously, is like leaving your house and car unlocked because it's 'inconvenient to business'"
Keep the terminology simple, relatable, and metaphorical.
Remember, the weakest link in any security system is people.
