I feel totally ignorant about this. Is there a difference between Hispanic and Latino? I see both used. I am still wondering where I put my white-British tick (though I also classify as white-Irish according to the UK census folks, but there isn't a tick for 100% Celtic)
I enjoy using "Other," and entering: "Scots-Prussian (not kidding)" :)

I have been told by (very offended) people of 100% Mexican ancestry not to call them Hispanic, as that refers to people from Spain which they (being, obvs, from Mexico) are not. Am also white/European and try to listen to what people who aren't say they want to be called...

Yes.
"Hispanic” focuses on Spanish-speaking origin. This means Spain is included, but Brazil is not because Brazilians speak Portuguese. “Latino” refers to people of Latin American origin. This includes Brazil and excludes Spain."

I had a friend who was PR and she wouldn't want to be called Hispanic. She was Latina. :)

What you need now is a toolbox ornament so you can take a pic of your toolbox ornament on your tree.
I don't really have ornaments on the tree much. Just some silver and blue and my gingerbread dude. I'm kind of a minimalist. :bubbles:

Yeah, they are expensive. My dad ended up getting the set they had from when he was a kid, so I grew up with some of the older lionel stuff from the late 40's or 50's. It was kind of one of the things that he did with my sister and I when we were kids. He dedicated half a garage to it. We built mountains out of plaster of paris and screen. Had slot cars that were integrated, and two trains running on different loops. My dad was the bomb. My sister still has all the old trains, just in a display case until she has a place she can realistically set it up.

An N guage setup the size of a door can get intense...those little things are so detailed and have so many accessories you can do a lot with them.
The layout I had I bought from a guy near Louisville for about $1000 or $1200 range. It probably cost over $3k to build, so I got a deal on it. The wiring the guy did on it was a bit confusing so I had to try to figure it out. Eventually got trains to run laps around the layout and most of the sidings powered, but it never worked as well as it should've. I posted several videos of it up on YouTube years ago.

It's a made up term trying to be "not offensive" where it wasn't offensive in the first place. "Latino" is proper in the way of the language, and only someone not familliar with it would think not saying Latina for females, or adding an "X" for everyone would be an issue. It's butchering the language for PC when there's not PC needed.
With respect, this seems like a political issue more than a linguistic one. All languages are constructs, and the constructs tend to be updated as society changes. You're of course free to be as prescriptivist as you like, but that doesn't mean the need for change doesn't exist.
