things cost more now?
My daughter is a sophomore in college. I am aware of how much things cost. She made $4000 over the summer and $700 during christmas break. Plus about $300 over thanksgiving break. She stays in a less than awesome apartment building and sold her car to help pay for college.

Is this a private university? Just curious..

(Just a note: I don't have anywhere near 50k in loans and went to an in-state school with a couple grants and worked two jobs.)

I'm doing some basic wordpress web development on the side. I get to work on gigs that are $500-$1500 and I don't have a degree. I do have to interact with clients sometimes and they don't care if I have a degree or not. If I were to work at a large firm or company, I'm sure they would want me to have a degree. Anything that is "white-collar", I expect a degree to be a requirement. In freelance, it's my experience that clients want to know what you can do, not what papers you have.

I can guarantee you that if you don't have a degree, yet you have a portfolio of websites that are better than the websites the large firms make, yes, you'll get the job over someone with a degree. Now, you WILL have to work HARD as hell to get to that level (harder than those that have the degree), but they will choose you.

There is also the problem of resumes being trashed before they get to HR because you haven't used the correct buzz words to get past their stupid HR system.

Protip: never use "any" for your desired position. Every job I've worked automatically tossed out applications that said that. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS list what position you want, even if that means submitting multiple applications/resumes

You can't defend $50,000 in student loans in 2 years so stop trying.
Lol who said that I was defending that? I'm not even close to 50k in debt so I honestly don't get where you're coming from now.

That wouldn't be experience... that would be brand recognition.

You can spend 10 years making bitchin' websites and still get turned down for jobs over other, less experienced applicants, because the HR department trashes your resume when they see that you don't have a degree.

Not sure why I wrote "dress" there.

we're talking web developement. In that field, they go with who has the best portfolio of websites built.

We had a very sophisticated method of filtering out job applicants at my last job.

We had a space on the form that said "If you are under 18, how old are you?"

If anyone wrote a number bigger than 18 in that space, it went in the trash.

No, the person with the Harvard degree who is 30 years younger than BG will get the job. Gates is an old guy now and old guys don't always come up with fresh invigorating ideas. He had his day. Now it's someone else's turn. Ask an HR person.
and once the hr person's boss finds out that they missed out on bill gates, that person will be fired.
